Due to the extensive rains of this past winter, there were delays in completion of the current phase of construction. Current construction hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
Over the summer, the contractor excavated up to four feet and lowered lanes in the median of I-5. From the bridge north, a base of aggregate gravel has been placed, graded, and compacted. We are doing the same for lanes south of the bridge. Then construction of falsework (temporary frame support) for the second half of the bridge will continue. The target date to begin construction of the second half of the bridge is now Autumn of 2019.
*Update: scheduled to be closed:

- Southbound *I-5 connector to southbound I-605 closed.

Alternate route: *Southbound I-710 to eastbound SR-91 to rejoin southbound I-5.
These closures are scheduled for separate nights and will re-open each morning. Closures complete at 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

Crews are now laying aggregate, tilling, grading, and compacting south of the bridge. Videos below from August 20:
The contractor used a “crusher” and conveyor to crush all of the concrete from the old freeway lanes and demolished it into small aggregate that is recycled and used a base for the new lanes. Then the aggregate is distributed along the median. Videos below:

We are installing new overhead freeway signs. Photos below:
The contractor is constructing “falsework” (temporary frame support) for the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge, just north of the existing bridge and west of I-5. Video below:
The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is projected to begin by autumn.
