There are no lane closures scheduled for the week of July 12 through July 19.
All lanes scheduled to be closed on northbound I-5 from Norwalk Blvd. to I-605 from 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 11 until 5 a.m. Friday, July 12 to shift traffic lanes. The Norwalk Blvd. off ramp from NB I-5 will remain open. Traffic will be detoured northbound on Norwalk Blvd. to westbound Imperial Highway to NB I-605 back to NB I-5.
Alternate route: use westbound SR-91 to NB I-605 to NB I-5.
Due to the extensive rains of this past winter, there were substantial delays in completion of the current phase of construction.
Over the summer, the contractor will be excavating earth to lower lanes in the median of I-5 and then paving the new lanes. Then construction of falsework (temporary frame support) for the second half of the bridge will continue. The target date to begin construction of the second half of the bridge is now September.
The contractor has demolished the old freeway lanes in the median of I-5 south of the Florence Ave. Bridge. Crews are now excavating and lowering the roadway surface up to four feet passing under the bridge before repaving. Then construction of the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge will begin. The contractor will set up a “crusher” conveyor that will crush all of the concrete and asphalt that has been demolished into small aggregate that will be recycled to create base for the new lanes. The contractor started constructing “falsework” (temporary frame support) for the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge, just north of the existing bridge. Photos from June 18 below:
The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is projected to begin by late summer.
