I-5 NORTH Construction Advisory – SR-134 to Buena Vista Street, January 3-10, 2020

Work will occur during daytime hours unless otherwise noted. The schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change.

Construction Activities

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

I-5 between Verdugo Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard: Crews are replacing concrete pavement. Some of this work occurs at night.

I-5 between SR-134 and Magnolia Boulevard: Crews are installing barrier-mounted signs, joint seals and the irrigation system. Some of this work occurs at night.

Providencia Avenue: Crews are installing lighting and fence barriers on the pedestrian bridge.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street

I-5 at Buena Vista Street: Crews are constructing freeway bridge approach and departure slabs.

Burbank Boulevard: Crews are constructing retaining walls and excavating.

Closures & Detours

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

Weekend I-5 Lane Closures:

NORTHBOUND I-5:  Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2020, and continuing until 4 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2020, northbound I-5 will be reduced to only one or two lanes as crews construct concrete pavement between Verdugo Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. 

SOUTHBOUND I-5:  Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, January 10 and continuing until 5 a.m. Monday, January 13, Southbound I-5 will be reduced to only one or two lanes as crews construct concrete pavement between Magnolia Boulevard and Verdugo Avenue in Burbank.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid delays on I-5 by using other routes during these weekend closures. The detour shown in GREEN below is recommended for drivers on northbound I-5 to bypass the construction area on January 3-6, and the detour shown in PURPLE is recommended for drivers on southbound I-5 to bypass the construction area on January 10-13:
 
The following schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change:
 
Friday, January 3
10 p.m. – The two right lanes will close, leaving only the two left lanes (lanes #1 and 2) open to traffic on northbound I-5 at Verdugo Avenue.
10 p.m. – The northbound I-5 off-ramp at Olive Avenue will close. (Also, on-ramps at Western Avenue, Alameda Avenue and Orange Grove Avenue will close during all or part of this extended weekend operation.) Detours are provided.
10 p.m. – The westbound State Route 134 connector to northbound I-5 will close. The westbound SR-134 on-ramps at Fairmont Avenue and San Fernando Road will close. The westbound SR-134 off-ramp at Zoo Drive will close. Detours are provided.
11 p.m. – The northbound #2 lane will close, leaving the #1 lane open to traffic.
 
Saturday, January 4
5 a.m. – The #2 lane will open (Lanes #1 and 2 will be open all day Saturday and Sunday).
9 a.m. – The Olive Avenue off-ramp will open.
 
Sunday, January 5
11 p.m. – The Olive Avenue off-ramp will close.
 
Monday, January 6
12:01 a.m. – The #2 lane will close, leaving only the #1 lane open.
4 a.m. – The #2 lane will open.
5 a.m. – All northbound lanes will open. The Olive Avenue off-ramp will open and nearby on-ramps will begin to open. The westbound SR-134 connector to northbound I-5 will open. The SR-134 on- and off-ramps will begin to open. 
 
Southbound I-5 Weekend Lane Closures: Starting on Friday, January 10, at 10 p.m., and continuing until 4 a.m. Monday, January 13, southbound I-5 will be reduced to only one or two lanes as crews construct concrete pavement between Magnolia Boulevard and Verdugo Avenue. The schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change.
Motorists are advised to avoid traffic delays on southbound I-5 by using other routes during these weekend closures. The detour shown in purple in the map, above, is recommended for drivers on southbound I-5 to bypass the construction area on January 10-13. 
Some ramps will be closed during all or part of these southbound I-5 lane closures, including the southbound I-5 on-ramps at Empire Avenue, Burbank Boulevard and Verdugo Avenue/Front Street. Detours are provided.
 

Intermittent Northbound and Southbound I-5 Lane Closures: Intermittent northbound and southbound lane closures between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., at times reducing I-5 to one or two lanes in either direction.

Alameda Avenue, Sonora Avenue, Western Avenue and South Flower Street Lane Closures: Intermittent daytime and nighttime street, ramp and lane closures on Alameda Avenue, Sonora Avenue, Western Avenue and South Flower Street. Detours are posted.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street

Long-term Ramp Closures at Burbank Boulevard:  Long-term or permanent ramp closures are in effect at three of the five I-5 on/off ramps at Burbank Boulevard. They are as follows:  The Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Boulevard is closed until 2020. The Northbound I-5 loop off-ramp to Westbound Burbank Boulevard and the Westbound Burbank Boulevard loop on-ramp to Southbound I-5 are closed permanently and new ramps will be constructed. Detours are posted.

Northbound and Southbound I-5 Lane Closures: Intermittent northbound and southbound lane closures between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., at times reducing I-5 to one or two lanes in either direction.

On- and Off-Ramp Closures and Lane Closures:  Intermittent on- and off-ramp closures and lane closures at Buena Vista Street, Empire Avenue,  San Fernando Boulevard and Burbank Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Detours are posted.
