Pile driving at the location of the old Pioneer Blvd. on ramp to northbound I-5 is now complete.

The following work is now underway:

  • Pouring base layer of concrete pavement for new northbound I-5 lanes from south of the San Antonio Bridge to the Imperial Highway Bridge.
  • Construction of sound wall along northbound I-5 between the San Antonio Bridge and Imperial Hwy on ramp.
  • Constructing curb and gutter near the San Antonio Bridge.
  • Installing drainage along Norwalk Blvd.

One more lane of lean concrete base has been poured on northbound I-5 south of the San Antonio Bridge; June 12 and June 19 (below):

“Approach slab” on the south end of the San Antonio Bridge before concrete pour (June 12) and after (June 19). Approach slabs provides extra stability for vehicles as they cross from the mainline lanes to the bridge (below):

At 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 23 the new Imperial Highway on ramp to northbound I-5 opened to the driving public. The on ramp is only accessible from westbound Imperial Highway for the first few months. Eastbound traffic on Imperial Highway is directed by signage to use northbound Firestone Blvd. to northbound I-605 to northbound I-5. (Photo below):

At 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, the Pioneer Blvd. on ramp to northbound I-5 closed permanently. Signs are in place to direct northbound and southbound traffic on Pioneer Blvd. over to Firestone Blvd. to northbound I-605 to northbound I-5 as the alternate route. This area will be used  to construct two additional lanes on northbound I-5. Within the next few weeks, pile driving will begin here and it will last several weeks. Local residents should be aware of loud construction noise during the hours of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Photo below):

I-5 from Silverbow Ave. north all the way up to Pioneer Blvd. is in varying stages of progress with crews spreading base (gravel), grading, compacting and paving. This activity includes compaction with a vibratory roller, so residents in the nearby neighborhoods may experience noise and vibration during the day.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction may be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
