ROSECRANS Ave | BLOOMFIELD Ave Bridge Project – Week of July 17, 2016

After completing the traffic shift along northbound I-5, motorists are now driving on the newly constructed center lanes of the freeway. In addition to performing the traffic shift, crews permanently closed the old northbound I-5 on-ramp at Rosecrans Avenue. A new northbound on-ramp will be reconstructed with access directly from Rosecrans Avenue and will open in 2017. In the meantime, motorists can use the newly reopened northbound I-5 on-ramp at Carmenita Road or the existing northbound on-ramps at Norwalk Boulevard or Imperial Highway.

The traffic shift and ramp closure were both completed in preparation for the demolition of the old Rosecrans Avenue bridge, which began last week. This work will continue the week of July 17, and will require full closures of Rosecrans Avenue (to motorists and pedestrians) in both directions underneath I-5, nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22.

In addition, the northbound I-5 off-ramp at Rosecrans Avenue will also be closed during this time, as well as N. Firestone Boulevard, between Rosecrans Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue / Markdale Avenue. Changeable message signs will be placed in the field in advance of these closures to notify motorists and residents adjacent to this work will be notified in advance as well. The closure areas are shown on the map below in red; motorists will be directed to follow the detour routes highlighted in green. For additional information regarding these closures, please visit the project Google map or view at page bottom.

This bridge demolition activity must be conducted at night, when Rosecrans Avenue can be closed to traffic, to ensure the safety of crews and the traveling public. Please be advised, demolition activity may be loud and disruptive due to concrete demolition, heavy equipment, truck back-up alarms and related construction noise.

On Monday, July 18, crews will begin approximately two to three months of intermittent pile driving activity adjacent to the northbound I-5, from the northbound I-5 Rosecrans Avenue off-ramp to just south of the Silverbow Avenue pedestrian overcrossing. This work will be conducted weekdays (Monday through Friday), between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. While this work is underway, flaggers will be on site to direct traffic, while crews transfer piles from the contractor’s yard onto the construction site. While transferring piles, portions of Bloomfield Avenue, between Rosecrans Avenue and Markdale Avenue may be temporarily blocked during the daytime.

Pile driving activity is needed as crews construct structure foundations for the new retaining walls and soundwalls in the project area. Please be advised this work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, vibration and pounding related to pile driving activity. Additional information will be provided as this work nears.
