Early in 2022 we plan to open the remaining new lanes on the Valley View Ave. Bridge. The bridge will then have three lanes open to traffic in each direction, for a total of six lanes.  At the same time, we will open the new on ramp connecting the bridge to I-5 southbound lanes.

The temporary signal that Caltrans installed at the intersection of Park Place and Valley View Ave. will be removed and the intersection will be returned to its original status with no signal and no stop sign.

Full freeway and lane closures of Interstate 5 (Santa Ana Freeway) northbound are scheduled between Artesia Boulevard and Carmenita Road to place K-rail, stripe, and install signs. The closures are subject to change and are as follows:

The night of Monday, January 31:

  • Southbound I-5 left lane closed from Alondra Boulevard to Artesia Boulevard from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The night of Tuesday, Feb. 1:

  • Northbound I-5 left lane closed from Artesia Boulevard to Alondra Boulevard from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Two left lanes closed from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The night of Wednesday, Feb, 2:

  • Northbound I-5 all lanes closed from Artesia Boulevard to Carmenita Road from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Westbound State Route 91 (Artesia Freeway) connector to northbound I-5 closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Corresponding on and off ramps within the freeway closure will also be closed.

If necessary, a third night will be added. Watch for updates here and at https://twitter.com/My5LA .

If work is completed on schedule, traffic will be shifted onto the new northbound lanes next to the median and open to traffic on the morning of Thursday,  February 3.

Detour: Northbound traffic will be detoured off at Artesia Boulevard and directed back on to I-5 at Carmenita Road.

Alternate route: Westbound State Route 91 to northbound I-605 (San Gabriel River Freeway) to northbound I-5. Map below:

Workers have been removing forms from the stem walls and soffit (deck underside) to reveal the first layer of concrete on the ramp that will connect S. Firestone Blvd. to the Valley View Ave. Bridge: Photos below:

On Friday, January 14 the contractor poured the first layer of concrete on the S. Firestone Blvd. ramp that will connect to the Valley View Ave. Bridge. Photos below:

Workers constructed forms over the rebar stem walls for the first concrete pour in late December an early January. Photos below:

Workers continue constructing traffic barriers along new lanes and installing overhead traffic signs in the median of I-5. Photos below:

The contractor is finalizing work on the Valley View Ave. Bridge, including installation of a safety fence. Photos below:

On northbound I-5 there are now four all-purpose traffic lanes on I-5 from north of Valley View Ave. to the Florence Ave. Bridge. Then there are three all purpose lanes, plus two auxiliary lanes connecting to the northbound and southbound I-605. Under the I-605 Bridge, I-5  reverts to four all-purpose lanes, plus a fifth auxiliary lane connecting traffic from I-605 to I-5. Then it reduces again to four all-purpose lanes.

On southbound I-5 there are now five lanes where traffic merges from the I-605 interchange until the Orr & Day railroad overhead. Then it changes to four all-purpose lanes until south of Alondra Boulevard, where it reduces to three lanes approaching the Valley View Avenue interchange project that remains under construction until mid-2022.

When the Valley View Avenue Project is complete in mid-2022, we will open the additional car pool / HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes to traffic. At that time:

  • On northbound I-5 there will be an HOV lane from Valley View Ave. to the Orr & Day railroad overhead.
  • On southbound I-5 there will be an HOV lane from south of the Florence Ave. Bridge to Valley View Ave.
