Valley View Ave. Interchange Project – May 12, 2023 – May 19, 2023

 Construction on this project is 95% complete.

Moving forward, this web page will only be updated as needed, not necessarily on a weekly basis. 

Milestone Timeline: 

  • The first half of Valley View Ave. Bridge opened to traffic on October 7, 2019 with one lane in each direction. A second lane opened to traffic on the southbound side of the Valley View Avenue Bridge on September 18, 2020. A second lane opened to traffic on the northbound side on May 4, 2022.
  • The new Valley View Ave. off ramp from southbound I-5 opened on September 19, 2020.  
  • New S. Firestone connector ramp to southbound Valley View Ave. Bridge opened on February 28. 2021.
  • N. Firestone Blvd. re-opened between Knott Ave. and Trojan Way on February 28, 2021. 
  • New S. Firestone Blvd. running under the Valley View Ave. Bridge opened on July 13, 2020.
  • New I-5 northbound HOV lane from Alondra Blvd. to the Orr & Day Rd. railroad overhead, south of Florence Avenue, opened on February 11, 2022. As of June 30, four all-purpose lanes plus one HOV lane are open from the Orange County line to south of Florence Ave.
  • New I-5 southbound HOV lane from just south of the Florence Ave. Bridge in Santa Fe Springs to the Orange County line opened on Friday, April 8, 2022.
  • In the southbound lanes of N. Firestone Blvd. at Valley View Ave. a second lane opened in spring of 2022.
  • The new Valley View Avenue loop off ramp from northbound I-5 opened June 28. The old ramp is permanently closed and is being demolished. 
  • As of Thursday, September 1, 2022, three lanes were open to traffic in each direction of the Valley View Avenue Bridge. 
  • The new Valley View Avenue on ramp to southbound I-5 opened on Friday, September 2, 2022.
  • The S. Firestone Blvd. ramp connecting to the west side of the Valley View Avenue Bridge opened on Friday, September 2, 2022.   
  • As of the monring of April 5, 2023 final thermal striping was applied to the northbound lanes of I-5 between the Orange County line and Valley View Avenue and lanes were shifted back to the right (east) to their final configuration. All new lanes on I-5 and on the new Valley View Avenue Bridge are complete and open and all new on and off ramps are open.

The contractor performed overnight electrical work along the Aretsia Boulevard off ramp from southbound I-5. Photos below: 

A Southern California Edison contractor performed electrical work along North Firestone Boulevard and South Firestone Boulevard. Photos below:

Workers saw cut sidewalk on southbound Valley View Avenue at Alondra Boulevard and poured concrete on Alondra Boulevard at Freeway Drive. Photos below:

The night of April 20, the contractor installed lighting, overhead signs and traffic detection loops on the Valley View Avenue off-ramp from southbound I-5. Photos below:

The contractor constructed new sidewalk, curbs and gutters along S. Firestone Blvd., N. Firsetone Blvd., Gateway Drive and Arbor Place. Photos below:

The nights of April 2, 3 & 4 final thermal striping was applied to the northbound lanes of I-5 between the Orange County line and Valley View Avenue, final signage was placed and lanes were shifted back to the right (east) to their final configuration. All new lanes on I-5 and on the new Valley View Avenue Bridge are complete and open and all new on and off ramps are open. Photos of overnight work below: 

The contractor constructed metal beam guardrail and crash cushion along the Valley View Avenue off-ramp from northbound I-5. Photos below:

Workers constructed rock blanket along the I-5 northbound mainlines and the new Valley View Avenue off ramp. Photos below:

The contractor poured asphalt for lanes of the new Valley View Avenue off ramp from northbound I-5. Photos below:

The contractor constructed forms and poured concrete for the traffic barrier along the final northbound I-5 lanes and removed forms from the completed sections. Photos below:

Workers installed new traffic signals and restriped the Valley View Avenue Bridge the night of Tuesday, August 29 & Wednesday, August 30, 2022. As of Thursday, September 1, 2022 the Valley View Avenue Bridge over I-5 has three lanes open in each direction. Video & photos below:

On Thursday, June 30 the final segment of new lanes between the Orange County line and Alondra Boulevard opened. There are now four all-purpose lanes plus one HOV lane open from the Orange Couny line to south of  the Florence Avenue Bridge near I-605. Photos below show traffic using new lanes during the day and at night:

Construction of an Austin Vault sand filter is complete:

At 5 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022 the new HOV lane on southbound I-5 opened from just south of the Florence Ave. Bridge in Santa Fe Springs all the way to the Orange County line. This creates a total of five southbound lanes: four all-purpose lanes and one HOV lane. The lanes match those on the Orange County side of I-5.

The contractor poured lean concrete base, the first of two layers of concrete for the new northbound I-5 freeway lanes. Photos below:

At approximately 1:30 a.m. Friday, February 11, 2022 the I-5 northbound HOV lane was opened to traffic from Alondra Boulevard to the Orr & Day Road railroad overhead, south of Florence Avenue. There are now four northbound all-purpose lanes plus one HOV lane open within those parameters. There are still three lanes from the Orange County line to Alondra Boulevard. 

The northbound HOV lane from the Orange County line to Alondra Boulevard remains closed as the contractor continues reconstruction of the Valley View Avenue interchange.

On Thursday, February 10, 2022 the final layer of concrete was poured on the deck of the ramp that will connect S. Firestone Boulevard to the Valley View Ave. Bridge. Photos before and during pour below:

Workers poured the first layer of concrete and then removed wooden forms from the stem walls and soffit (deck underside) on the ramp that will connect S. Firestone Blvd. to the Valley View Ave. Bridge: Then they placed the forms horizontally across the stem walls as a base to lay the next layer of rebar. Photos below (in order of progress): 

On northbound I-5 there are now four all-purpose traffic lanes plus one HOV (high occupancy vehicle) or carpool lane on I-5 from the Orange County line to the Orr & Day Road railroad overhead south of the Florence Ave. Bridge. Then there are three all purpose lanes, plus two auxiliary lanes connecting to the northbound and southbound I-605. Under the I-605 Bridge, I-5  reverts to four all-purpose lanes, plus a fifth auxiliary lane connecting traffic from I-605 to I-5. Then it reduces again to four all-purpose lanes.
